{"id":873,"date":"2012-06-20T08:42:27","date_gmt":"2012-06-20T07:42:27","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.longkeshinsideout.co.uk\/?p=873"},"modified":"2012-06-23T15:26:56","modified_gmt":"2012-06-23T14:26:56","slug":"define-the-term-loyalist","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.longkeshinsideout.co.uk\/?p=873","title":{"rendered":"Define the Term Loyalist"},"content":{"rendered":"<p align=\"center\"><strong>Define the Term \u201cLoyalist \u201c.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>\u00a0<strong>Loyalism<em>:<\/em><\/strong><em>\u00a0 the loyalty to an established government, political party, or sovereign, especially during war or revolutionary change.\u00a0 In modern English usage the most common application is to the British Crown.<\/em><\/p>\n<p><strong>\u00a0<\/strong><strong>Ulster Loyalism:<\/strong>\u00a0 <em>is an ideology that is opposed to a united Ireland.\u00a0 It can mean either support for upholding Northern Ireland\u2019s status as a constituent part of the United Kingdom (i.e. unionism), support for Northern Ireland independence, or support for loyalist paramilitaries.\u00a0 It is a belief most predominant among, and traditionally held by Protestants in Northern Ireland.<\/em><\/p>\n<p><em><\/em><\/p>\n<p><!--more--><em><\/em><\/p>\n<p><em>\u00a0<\/em>The definition of the term loyalist may well have changed over the years\u2014particularly the years that spanned the most recent conflict.\u00a0 What it meant to be a loyalist say in the late sixties or early seventies may not necessarily mean the same thing today.\u00a0 Many things have transpired in the intervening years that could cause one to change their views or standpoint.\u00a0 For instance in the early years of the troubles for many the allegiance was solely to Queen and Crown.\u00a0 For the same people could this be equally true today?\u00a0 After almost half a century of duplicity on behalf of successive British governments could that former allegiance now have shifted to a position whereby the main concern is the six counties of Ulster?\u00a0 And in an age where paramilitary groupings\u2014over the same period&#8211; have virtually dominated many areas in working class loyalism does our loyalty belong to them?\u00a0 Can we be loyal to our own communities only?\u00a0 Are there other scenarios not mentioned here?\u00a0 Does the term loyalist have an entirely different meaning now?\u00a0 Who are we and what are we loyal to?<\/p>\n<div style=\"padding-bottom:20px;
