Imperious\u2014on high\u2014almost a dot
\nplummets in a freefall\u2014like a gunshot
\nfocused\u2014fixed and resolute
\nhoming in\u2014an Exocet\u2014astute–
\ndoesn\u2019t waiver\u2014zooms in at a hundred plus,
\nwith precision-an arrow straight and true
\nA dive-a drop from cloudy heights
\nPlumage sleeked back-its hue,
\nbrown\/grey to conceal from unsuspecting prey
\nThe prey-camouflaged-amidst the wire-it thinks:
\nCowers in awe-in trepidation-slinks–in dread
\nat its impending doom-petrified-frozen to the spot
\nturned to stone—and not\u2014wanting to move\u2014presents itself:
\nA shrill piercing cry\u2014a salutation from a monarch of the sky:
\nImpact\u2014swift\u2014incisive\u2014a flurry of feathers–Rip\u2014and Slash:
\nThen stillness\u2014surveys the scene\u2014and begins to pluck-to tug and preen\u2014then gone\u2014its prey grasped by its talons\u2014hooked around its lifeless form.<\/p>\n
Written by an old compound man – a veteran of most of them in fact \u2013 the inspiration for this short piece came from the many hours spent by he and a number of prisoners watching the bird of prey. No one can be sure if in fact it was the same bird all the time but when the shout echoed through the huts \u2013 \u2018The Hawk\u2019s Up\u2019 \u2013 there was a dash to the wire to see this wonderful act of nature unfold.<\/p>\n
