INTRO--><\/section>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>The new Education Minister has criticised a PUP report on educational underachievement for failing to discuss the impact of paramilitarism in loyalist areas.<\/p>\n<p><!--more--><\/p>\n<p>Last year PUP deputy leader Dr John Kyle published a report, Firm Foundations, based on work by the Unionist Forum, which was set up in response to the loyalist flag protests in 2012.<\/p>\n<section>\n<div>\n<div>\n<div>Asked if he was likely to have a working partnership of any sort with Dr Kyle based on the report, new minister Peter Weir replied: \u201cThere are a lot of points in it I would otherwise agree with, but we differ on a couple of points, for example the PUP is hostile to academic selection.\u201d<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div marginwidth=\"0\" marginheight=\"0\" scrolling=\"no\" width=\"0\" height=\"0\"><\/iframe>He would agree with the PUP on the importance of \u201cearly intervention\u201d and \u201cpositive [educational] role models\u201d he said.<\/div>\n<div id=\"taboola-mobile-mid-article-text-links-title\"><\/div>\n<div id=\"taboola-mobile-mid-article-text-links\">\u00a0\u201cBut paramilitarism was the elephant in the room which was not mentioned in the PUP report.<\/div>\n<p>\u201cIt was one aspect that is not helpful to education achievement among young Protestant males in particular that was surprisingly not mentioned by the PUP in their report.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Asked would he be likely to have any sort of working partnership with the PUP on the issues, he replied: \u201cThere are quite a number of reports which address the underachievement raised in the PUP report.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The department has more recently taken on wide responsibility for child <a id=\"itxthook1\" href=\"http:\/\/www.newsletter.co.uk\/news\/northern-ireland-news\/peter-weir-pup-ignored-effect-of-paramilitarism-on-school-failings-1-7403678#\" rel=\"nofollow\">care<img decoding=\"async\" id=\"itxthook1icon\" src=\"http:\/\/images.intellitxt.com\/ast\/adTypes\/icon1.png\" alt=\"\" \/><\/a> issues which will provide great opportunities for early interventions.<\/p>\n<p>There are encouraging projects in this area on the Shankill and west Belfast as well as Lisburn, he added.<\/p>\n<\/section>\n<p>Read more: <a
