{"id":2357,"date":"2013-09-03T09:02:35","date_gmt":"2013-09-03T08:02:35","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.longkeshinsideout.co.uk\/?p=2357"},"modified":"2013-09-03T09:03:59","modified_gmt":"2013-09-03T08:03:59","slug":"a-little-bit-of-long-kesh-history-primo","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.longkeshinsideout.co.uk\/?p=2357","title":{"rendered":"A Little Bit of Long Kesh History: Primo"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.longkeshinsideout.co.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/09\/1988a-22.jpg\"><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"alignleft size-medium wp-image-2364\" title=\"1988a (2)\" src=\"http:\/\/www.longkeshinsideout.co.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/09\/1988a-22-211x300.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"211\" height=\"300\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.longkeshinsideout.co.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/09\/1988a-22-211x300.jpg 211w, https:\/\/www.longkeshinsideout.co.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/09\/1988a-22-720x1024.jpg 720w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 211px) 100vw, 211px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><strong>With the granting of political status in late 1972 the compound-or cage-system was set in place to house those prisoners who were deemed to be politically motivated.\u00a0 Four years later and government policy had changed with the inception of the new H blocks where those still deemed to be incarcerated for politically motivated &#8220;offences&#8221; had to endure a system set in place to criminalise them.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.longkeshinsideout.co.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/09\/1988b-2.jpg\"><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"alignleft size-medium wp-image-2361\" title=\"1988b (2)\" src=\"http:\/\/www.longkeshinsideout.co.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/09\/1988b-2-212x300.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"212\" height=\"300\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.longkeshinsideout.co.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/09\/1988b-2-212x300.jpg 212w, https:\/\/www.longkeshinsideout.co.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/09\/1988b-2-724x1024.jpg 724w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 212px) 100vw, 212px\" \/><\/a>The compounds that remained from a UVF\/RHC perspective diminished\u00a0in keeping with\u00a0the number of men being released when their determinate sentences expired.\u00a0 Gusty Spence was released in 1983 and two years later the last of the men who had been sentenced to 20 years were also gone.<br \/>\nIn effect what was left was a group of men&#8211;now\u00a0housed in a single compound-21&#8211;who were either Life Sentence prisoners or\u00a0SOSP&#8217;s.&#8211;younger guys who were serving Secretary of State&#8217;s Pleasure.\u00a0 No new faces arrived into Long Kesh after early 1977 and they were people who had been sentenced for something that occurred pre March 1976.\u00a0 With the numbers dwindling&#8211;not just in the UFV\/RHC compound&#8211;but in the others&#8211;compound 20 housed Official IRA men and the numbers there dropped to 3 before the decision was taken to close the compound and move the trio to the Crumlin Road jail.\u00a0 The talk then was the authorities had &#8220;done\u00a0a deal&#8221; with the Stickies to close the cage.\u00a0 The theory was that they would be looked upon favourably in the next Life Sentence review.<br \/>\n<a href=\"http:\/\/www.longkeshinsideout.co.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/09\/lkiopreRel-21.jpg\"><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"alignleft size-medium wp-image-2362\" title=\"lkiopreRel (2)\" src=\"http:\/\/www.longkeshinsideout.co.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/09\/lkiopreRel-21-208x300.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"208\" height=\"300\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.longkeshinsideout.co.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/09\/lkiopreRel-21-208x300.jpg 208w, https:\/\/www.longkeshinsideout.co.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/09\/lkiopreRel-21-712x1024.jpg 712w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 208px) 100vw, 208px\" \/><\/a>By 1988 the writing was on the wall for the\u00a0entire compound system and we knew for quite a while that the move was inevitable.
