\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n 6 weeks now I\u2019m here\u2014the board papers usually only take about 3 or 4 at the most.<\/span><\/p>\n <\/p>\n \u00a0 John, you know from the Crum, was dead right\u2014about claiming political status—takes ages\u2014This is a mixed compound\u2014plenty of IRA ones in our hut.<\/span>\u00a0 There is always tension and sometimes fights.<\/span>\u00a0 A fella in here\u2014not a political one\u2014just a wee lad that\u2019s in for burglary\u2014says I might get the political thing when I turn 18\u2014that\u2019s in another three weeks.<\/span>\u00a0 Hope he\u2019s right.<\/span>\u00a0 I got stuck on one of the work parties\u2014orderly in the officers\u2019 mess\u2014in the Silver City where the screws live.<\/span>\u00a0 You make dinners for them or else wash their dishes\u2014it\u2019s okay\u2014you get 23 pence a week\u2014that\u2019s 2 pence more than an ordinary orderly.<\/span>\u00a0 We walk till work in the mornings and back after tea time.<\/span>\u00a0 You pass the loyalist compounds\u201411 and 12 every day\u2014in the mornings you see the UVF ones running round the wire\u2014all dressed the same in black and running in step!!<\/span>\u00a0 I recognise some of them but the screws don\u2019t like you talking till them\u2014some of them throw tobacco over but you\u2019re a feared till lift it.<\/span>\u00a0 I seen Gusty one day last week\u2014just walking round smoking a pipe.<\/span>\u00a0 All the Prods in here had a minutes silence the other day for Albert Brown\u2014but he got a reprieve\u2014we had him dead and all!!<\/span>\u00a0 Away now\u2014lock up at 8o\u2019clock.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n
