If you can\u2019t see a problem, then you can\u2019t fix it; and if you can\u2019t see, or won\u2019t accept, that you are part of that problem, then the route out of that predicament becomes all the more challenging to navigate.<\/p>\n

After almost 650 days without government on the political hill at Stormont, the question is shifting \u2013 no longer when a functioning government will be restored but, rather, if it will be restored.<\/p>\n

There is no evidence of \u201ca laser-like focus\u201d on creating a process that has any chance of achieving a return to power-sharing anytime soon, and if Secretary of State Karen Bradley thinks there is, then she needs a visit to Specsavers.<\/p>\n

Just listen to the parties when they return from their meetings at the Northern Ireland Office; the talk of groundhog day, of the need to re-energise the talks process, the need for leadership, talk of smokescreens and sticking plaster solutions and, from some, talk of the need for an independent chair.<\/p>\n

Why an independent chair? Because the NIO, handcuffed to the Tory\/DUP arrangement in London, is not trusted.<\/p>\n

Not trusted because in February when the DUP walked away from an agreement and negotiations at Stormont, the Secretary of State was silent.<\/p>\n

That broken deal \u2013 that failure to call out the problem then \u2013 will make any new agreement all the more difficult.<\/p>\n

So,this talk of \u201ca laser-like focus\u201d is just that \u2013 TALK.<\/p>\n

In this long standoff, we have moved from a few dropped stitches to something closer to the complete unravelling of the political process; and, with too much time on too many hands, old battles are being fought.<\/p>\n

Legacy is one example.<\/p>\n

Another, the focus in recent days on one-time significant leaders in the IRA who now have a political role within Sinn Fein.<\/p>\n

Did no one read the reports of the Independent Monitoring Commission, including this paragraph written more than a decade ago?<\/p>\n

‘There is one further thing to which we wish to draw attention on this occasion. PIRA’s commitment to following the political path has been further reinforced in this period under review with a number of people making the transition to positions in Sinn Fein and thereby engagement in democratic politics. since the time of its announcement nearly three years ago PIRA’s strategy has included the movement of members into political life and we view these changes as important further evidence of the move to a peaceful and democratic role.’<\/strong><\/p>\n

Have people forgotten the role loyalists \u2013 many of them former prisoners \u2013 played in helping David Trimble over the line in 1998?<\/p>\n

Would there have been a Good Friday Agreement without the contribution made at that time by Gusty Spence, David Ervine, William \u2018Plum\u2019 Smith and others in the building as the Good Friday Agreement emerged?<\/p>\n

The political involvement of loyalists and republicans is essential; needed in a transition from conflict to peace. It is how you change things; but, in the here-and-now, nothing is going to change at Stormont.<\/p>\n

There is no laser-like-focus; but, rather, too many distractions and diversions.<\/p>\n

This is the reality.<\/p>\n

There will be no better deal than the one on offer in February (the details of which can be read elsewhere on this website).<\/p>\n

No one is being fooled. Politics is lost in what Ulster Unionist MLA Mike Nesbitt recently described as that \u201cNo Man\u2019s land between Devolution and Direct Rule\u201d.<\/p>\n

The Brexit and RHI fallout will make it all the more difficult to get a political deal here.<\/p>\n

A return to Stormont? Can you see it? Would a visit to Specsavers help?<\/p>\n
