font-family: Calibri; font-size: medium;\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: Calibri;\"><strong><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><span style=\"font-size: medium;\">Saturday 27<\/span><sup><span style=\"font-size: small;\">th<\/span><\/sup><\/span><span style=\"color: #000000; font-size: medium;\"> and Sunday 28<\/span><sup><span style=\"color: #000000; font-size: small;\">th<\/span><\/sup><span style=\"color: #000000; font-size: medium;\"> of June 1970<\/span><\/strong><span style=\"color: #000000; font-size: medium;\"> will live long in the memory of those who were witness to the horrific events that unfolded that weekend.<\/span><span style=\"color: #000000; font-size: medium;\">\u00a0 <\/span><span style=\"color: #000000; font-size: medium;\">Of the two people and many others who were injured by the indiscriminate gunfire their families pain has been exacerbated in the intervening years as they have had to endure the ignominy of the perpetuated untruth that somehow this incident was some sort of glorious battle honour by the Short Strand IRA, and that their sectarian murderous attacks were in actual fact heroic defending of a ghetto under siege.<\/span><span style=\"color: #000000; font-size: medium;\">\u00a0 <\/span><span style=\"color: #000000; font-size: medium;\">So much so that an erroneous moniker of <\/span><strong><span style=\"color: #000000; font-size: medium;\">\u201cThe Battle of Saint Matthews\u201d<\/span><\/strong><span style=\"color: #000000; font-size: medium;\"> was bestowed upon it.<\/span><span style=\"color: #000000; font-size: medium;\">\u00a0 <\/span><\/span><span style=\"font-family: Calibri;\"><span style=\"color: #000000; font-size: medium;\">However all right thinking citizens are well aware of the FACTS surrounding that day\u2019s events and can quite easily debunk this theoretical falsehood.<br \/>\n<\/span><span style=\"color: #000000; font-size: medium;\"> Almost one year after the onset of \u201cThe Troubles\u201d the Republican movement and the Belfast IRA in particular were in disarray.<\/span><span style=\"color: #000000; font-size: medium;\">\u00a0 <\/span><span style=\"color: #000000; font-size: medium;\">In July and August of 1969 they, as a grouping had done little\u2014in the eyes of the Catholic population in working class areas\u2014to defend those communities from the \u201cLoyalist hordes \u201c.<\/span><span style=\"color: #000000; font-size: medium;\">\u00a0 <\/span><span style=\"color: #000000; font-size: medium;\">The acronym now read I Ran Away.<\/span><span style=\"color: #000000; font-size: medium;\">\u00a0 <\/span><span style=\"color: #000000; font-size: medium;\">Behind the scenes an idealistic shift was also taking place\u2014a shift that would eventually \u2013and inevitably lead to fractions within the movement, culminating in feuds and counter feuds.<\/span><span style=\"color: #000000; font-size: medium;\">\u00a0 <\/span><span style=\"color: #000000; font-size: medium;\">The new hardliners\u2014although many were seasoned veterans of the organisation&#8211;were making their presence felt.<\/span><span style=\"color: #000000; font-size: medium;\">\u00a0 <\/span><span style=\"color: #000000; font-size: medium;\">Individuals like <\/span><strong><span style=\"color: #000000; font-size: medium;\">Francis Card\u2014Billy<\/span><\/strong><span style=\"font-size: medium;\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><strong>McKee\u2014Joe Cahill-Seamus Twomey and Leo Martin.<\/strong>\u00a0 <\/span><\/span><span style=\"color: #000000; font-size: medium;\">McKee, as the Belfast Brigade commander knew that<\/span><span style=\"color: #000000; font-size: medium;\">\u00a0 <\/span><\/span><span style=\"font-family: Calibri;\"><span style=\"color: #000000; font-size: medium;\">in order to make a statement and win back the affections of the disillusioned Catholic inhabitants he needed a victory\u2014something that would announce the arrival of the new Provisional movement.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p><!--more--><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: Calibri;\"><span style=\"color: #000000; font-size: medium;\"><br \/>\n<\/span><span style=\"color: #000000; font-size: medium;\"> The annual <\/span><strong><span style=\"color: #000000; font-size: medium;\">Whiterock<\/span><\/strong><span style=\"color: #000000; font-size: medium;\"> parade took place on the last Saturday in June each year and until then had moved from the West Belfast Orange Hall on the Shankill to the Whiterock Orange Hall on the Springfield Road and back again&#8230;.without incident.<\/span><span style=\"color: #000000; font-size: medium;\">\u00a0 <\/span><span style=\"color: #000000; font-size: medium;\">June 1970 was to become a watershed in that particular event.<\/span><span style=\"color: #000000; font-size: medium;\">\u00a0 <\/span><span style=\"color: #000000; font-size: medium;\">There were orchestrated attacks on the parade at various intervals along the route and heavy fighting ensued leaving many bandsmen and marchers injured.<\/span><span style=\"color: #000000; font-size: medium;\">\u00a0 <\/span><span style=\"color: #000000; font-size: medium;\">News of the attacks quickly spread throughout Belfast and rumours abounded in the East of the City that in fact there had been a couple of fatalities.<\/span><span style=\"color: #000000; font-size: medium;\">\u00a0 <\/span><\/span><span style=\"font-family: Calibri;\"><span style=\"color: #000000; font-size: medium;\">Luckily the rumours proved to be unfounded but it would only be a matter of hours before events would take a turn for the worse.<br \/>\n<\/span><span style=\"color: #000000; font-size: medium;\"> In the late afternoon on the 27<\/span><sup><span style=\"color: #000000; font-size: small;\">th<\/span><\/sup><span style=\"color: #000000; font-size: medium;\"> June <\/span><strong><span style=\"color: #000000; font-size: medium;\">Gertrude Star<\/span><\/strong><span style=\"color: #000000; font-size: medium;\"> was one of those bands returning from the Whiterock Parade along the <\/span><span style=\"font-size: medium;\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><strong>Newtownards Road.<\/strong>\u00a0 <\/span><\/span><span style=\"color: #000000; font-size: medium;\">On passing <\/span><strong><span style=\"color: #000000; font-size: medium;\">Seaforde Street<\/span><\/strong><span style=\"color: #000000; font-size: medium;\"> the band and a small group of followers were attacked\u2014viciously and without warning \u2013by a large number of Nationalist residents.<\/span><span style=\"color: #000000; font-size: medium;\">\u00a0 <\/span><span style=\"color: #000000; font-size: medium;\">This was the precursor for the more premeditated and brutal affront later in the evening.<\/span><span style=\"color: #000000; font-size: medium;\">\u00a0 <\/span><span style=\"color: #000000; font-size: medium;\">Almost a softening up.<\/span><span style=\"color: #000000; font-size: medium;\">\u00a0 <\/span><span style=\"color: #000000; font-size: medium;\">A trap had been laid by the IRA to entice the Protestants of the Lower Newtownards Road to respond to the provocation\u2014to draw them in\u2014and walk them straight into a deadly snare.<\/span><span style=\"color: #000000; font-size: medium;\">\u00a0 <\/span><span style=\"color: #000000; font-size: medium;\">From tea time until pub closing time\u2014in those days 10:00 pm\u2014an uneasy peace ensued\u2014tensions were electric\u2014crowds of locals gathered at various points along the main Newtownards Road and in the side streets off it.<\/span><span style=\"color: #000000; font-size: medium;\">\u00a0 <\/span><span style=\"color: #000000; font-size: medium;\">What they didn\u2019t know at this time was that in the streets off Seaforde Street\u2014Arran street in particular\u2014Billy McKee had formed the Belfast Brigade of the IRA up and was openly parading his men complete with an array of weapons.<\/span><span style=\"color: #000000; font-size: medium;\">\u00a0 <\/span><span style=\"color: #000000; font-size: medium;\">Fortuitously\u2014or coincidentally for the Nationalists in the Short Strand Belfast was awash with many IRA men this particular day.<\/span><span style=\"color: #000000; font-size: medium;\">\u00a0 <\/span><span style=\"color: #000000; font-size: medium;\">They had travelled from far and wide to bury a recently deceased <\/span><span style=\"color: #000000; font-size: medium;\">\u00a0<\/span><span style=\"color: #000000; font-size: medium;\">Republican stalwart.<\/span><span style=\"color: #000000; font-size: medium;\">\u00a0 <\/span><\/span><span style=\"font-family: Calibri;\"><span style=\"color: #000000; font-size: medium;\">It is likely that McKee and his cohorts seized upon this opportunity to launch their fiendish attack on the innocent population of the Lower Newtownards Road.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: Calibri;\"><span style=\"color: #000000; font-size: medium;\">Around the time that Gertude Star was returning from the Whiterock Parade along the Newtownards Road, all hell was breaking loose on the other side of town.<\/span><span style=\"color: #000000; font-size: medium;\">\u00a0 <\/span><span style=\"color: #000000; font-size: medium;\">Republicans\u2014again as part of a premeditated plan\u2014had attacked the main parade with gunfire leaving 4 Protestant men dead or dying from their wounds.<\/span><span style=\"font-size: medium;\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\">\u00a0 <strong>Danny Loughins, Sandy Gould and Billy Kincaid<\/strong><\/span><\/span><span style=\"color: #000000; font-size: medium;\"> died as a result of gunfire coming from Ardoyne while <\/span><strong><span style=\"color: #000000; font-size: medium;\">Tommy Reid<\/span><\/strong><\/span><span style=\"font-family: Calibri;\"><span style=\"color: #000000; font-size: medium;\"> would subsequently pass away a week later from gunshot wounds he received at Mayo Street on the Springfield Road.<br \/>\n<\/span><span style=\"color: #000000; font-size: medium;\"> As darkness fell and tensions rose the spark that ignited the flames occurred.<\/span><span style=\"color: #000000; font-size: medium;\">\u00a0 <\/span><span style=\"color: #000000; font-size: medium;\">On a pre arranged signal a youth emerged from the shadows of Seaforde Street waving a tricolour.<\/span><span style=\"color: #000000; font-size: medium;\">\u00a0 <\/span><span style=\"color: #000000; font-size: medium;\">As expected many of the Protestant crowd surged towards the provocateur.<\/span><span style=\"color: #000000; font-size: medium;\">\u00a0 <\/span><span style=\"color: #000000; font-size: medium;\">Immediately a lone IRA man stepped forward\u2014crouched down on one knee into a firing position and unleashed a volley of shots from a pistol in the direction of the crowd.<\/span><span style=\"color: #000000; font-size: medium;\">\u00a0 <\/span><span style=\"color: #000000; font-size: medium;\">Mayhem and panic ensued.<\/span><span style=\"color: #000000; font-size: medium;\">\u00a0 <\/span><span style=\"color: #000000; font-size: medium;\">After the initial salvo of shots a barrage of heavy gunfire followed forcing the Protestants to dive for cover in the little side streets.<\/span><span style=\"color: #000000; font-size: medium;\">\u00a0 <\/span><span style=\"color: #000000; font-size: medium;\">The reaction was one of sheer panic.<\/span><span style=\"color: #000000; font-size: medium;\">\u00a0 <\/span><span style=\"color: #000000; font-size: medium;\">Sure there had been incidents before this and indeed you only had to go back a year to recall the first days of the Troubles the previous August when sectarian strife was on a high.<\/span><span style=\"color: #000000; font-size: medium;\">\u00a0 <\/span><\/span><span style=\"font-family: Calibri;\"><span style=\"color: #000000; font-size: medium;\">But to be targeted totally indiscriminately and in a deliberate fashion by gunfire\u2014much of it from high calibre weapons was a new departure for the beleaguered residents.<br \/>\n<\/span><span style=\"color: #000000; font-size: medium;\"> Unlike their Catholic counterparts the locals on the Newtownards Road had not been preparing for such an attack and when it came it left them vulnerable and exposed with very little means of defence.<\/span><span style=\"color: #000000; font-size: medium;\">\u00a0 <\/span><span style=\"color: #000000; font-size: medium;\">Hastily some of those who were present issued an appeal to provide arms to protect the streets.<\/span><span style=\"color: #000000; font-size: medium;\">\u00a0 <\/span><span style=\"color: #000000; font-size: medium;\">In a short space of time a small stockpile was amassed.<\/span><span style=\"color: #000000; font-size: medium;\">\u00a0 <\/span><span style=\"color: #000000; font-size: medium;\">This amounted to a paltry number of weapons\u2014A Steyr rifle\u2014an old Martini Henry\u2014a Lee Enfield rifle and a couple of hand guns\u2014some dating back to the previous century\u2014but in the face of the fusillade now being directed from the supposed sanctuary of St. Matthews Roman Catholic Church it amounted to little by way of defence.<\/span><span style=\"color: #000000; font-size: medium;\">\u00a0 <\/span><span style=\"color: #000000; font-size: medium;\">The gunfire was intense.<\/span><span style=\"color: #000000; font-size: medium;\">\u00a0 <\/span><span style=\"color: #000000; font-size: medium;\">It was almost impossible for those pinned down to move.<\/span><span style=\"color: #000000; font-size: medium;\">\u00a0 <\/span><span style=\"color: #000000; font-size: medium;\">The Chapel\u2014particularly the high vantage points\u2014offered a commanding views of the facing streets\u2014Frazer\u2014Roxburgh\u2014Wolff\u2014Josephine\u2014and the gunmen fired at will.<\/span><span style=\"color: #000000; font-size: medium;\">\u00a0 <\/span><span style=\"color: #000000; font-size: medium;\">Any counter attack from the loyalist side paled in comparison but there were many brave souls that night who stood up to the enormous task.<\/span><span style=\"color: #000000; font-size: medium;\">\u00a0 <\/span><\/span><span style=\"font-family: Calibri;\"><span style=\"color: #000000; font-size: medium;\">Only for their returning fire\u2014with a pathetically low number of rounds\u2014certainly saved further casualties and dare say it, fatalities.<br \/>\n<\/span><span style=\"color: #000000; font-size: medium;\"> The onslaught continued into the early hours of the morning.<\/span><span style=\"color: #000000; font-size: medium;\">\u00a0 <\/span><span style=\"color: #000000; font-size: medium;\">Republicans claimed the IRA fired over 800 rounds that night but in the Loyalist estimation that figure falls far short of the actual number.<\/span><span style=\"color: #000000; font-size: medium;\">\u00a0 <\/span><span style=\"color: #000000; font-size: medium;\">At some point during the fray the Army returned fire but didn\u2019t become engaged in a gun battle as many claim.<\/span><span style=\"color: #000000; font-size: medium;\">\u00a0 <\/span><span style=\"color: #000000; font-size: medium;\">The IRA was allowed to continue their assault until first light was breaking through.<\/span><span style=\"color: #000000; font-size: medium;\">\u00a0 <\/span><span style=\"color: #000000; font-size: medium;\">By then two innocent local men lay dead and a total of twenty eight lay wounded\u2014men\u2014women and children.<\/span><span style=\"color: #000000; font-size: medium;\">\u00a0 <\/span><\/span><span style=\"font-family: Calibri;\"><span style=\"color: #000000; font-size: medium;\">All of those killed or wounded can be described as innocent because they were going about their normal business\u2014walking home from a night out\u2014visiting friends and relatives to make sure they were safe\u2014or simply standing outside their own terraced houses.<br \/>\n<\/span><strong><span style=\"color: #000000; font-size: medium;\">Jimmy McCurrie<\/span><\/strong><span style=\"color: #000000; font-size: medium;\"> was a family man\u201445 years old with four children and a wife who was pregnant.<\/span><span style=\"color: #000000; font-size: medium;\">\u00a0 <\/span><span style=\"color: #000000; font-size: medium;\">He lived at Ardilaun Street\u2014a small terraced street that cut across Frazer Street.<\/span><span style=\"color: #000000; font-size: medium;\">\u00a0 <\/span><span style=\"color: #000000; font-size: medium;\">He had been out that afternoon for a few drinks with his usual crowd of friends.<\/span><span style=\"color: #000000; font-size: medium;\">\u00a0 <\/span><span style=\"color: #000000; font-size: medium;\">Scotch Row pub was one of his favourite watering holes and he spent some time there before going home for his dinner.<\/span><span style=\"color: #000000; font-size: medium;\">\u00a0 <\/span><span style=\"color: #000000; font-size: medium;\">He went back to Scotch Row that night before heading up to the Buffs Club on the Albertbridge Road to once again meet his friends.<\/span><span style=\"color: #000000; font-size: medium;\">\u00a0 <\/span><span style=\"color: #000000; font-size: medium;\">At closing time the group decided to return to Jimmy\u2019s house and as they usually did cut down Beechfield Street as a short cut. The streets were unusually deserted as the friends made their way home.<\/span><span style=\"color: #000000; font-size: medium;\">\u00a0 <\/span><span style=\"color: #000000; font-size: medium;\">At the corner of Beechfield Street and Bryson Street a volley of shots rang out&#8230;from Kilmood<\/span><span style=\"color: #000000; font-size: medium;\">\u00a0 <\/span><span style=\"color: #000000; font-size: medium;\">Street&#8211;directed at the group.<\/span><span style=\"color: #000000; font-size: medium;\">\u00a0 <\/span><span style=\"color: #000000; font-size: medium;\">Jimmy McCurrie fell to the ground\u2014mortally wounded.<\/span><span style=\"color: #000000; font-size: medium;\">\u00a0 <\/span><span style=\"color: #000000; font-size: medium;\">A post mortem would reveal that Jimmy had been continually targeted after the initial shot had felled him.<\/span><span style=\"color: #000000; font-size: medium;\">\u00a0 <\/span><\/span><span style=\"font-family: Calibri;\"><span style=\"color: #000000; font-size: medium;\">Jimmy was carried to a house in Thistle Street in the hope of administering first aid\u2014but to no avail.<br \/>\n<\/span><strong><span style=\"color: #000000; font-size: medium;\">Bobby Neill<\/span><\/strong><span style=\"color: #000000; font-size: medium;\"> was a local man\u2014he was a single man who lived at this time in Central Street.<\/span><span style=\"color: #000000; font-size: medium;\">\u00a0 <\/span><span style=\"color: #000000; font-size: medium;\">He had worked in various places during his adult life and at this time was employed in the Irish Bonding.<\/span><span style=\"color: #000000; font-size: medium;\">\u00a0 <\/span><span style=\"color: #000000; font-size: medium;\">On this particular Saturday Bobby, who was 43 years old had spent much of the afternoon with his friends frequenting local bars, including McMahon\u2019s\u2014a Catholic owned bar in which both Protestants and Catholics drank.<\/span><span style=\"color: #000000; font-size: medium;\">\u00a0 <\/span><span style=\"color: #000000; font-size: medium;\">As people did in those days\u2014Ginger\u2014as he was called\u2014went home around tea time.<\/span><span style=\"color: #000000; font-size: medium;\">\u00a0 <\/span><span style=\"color: #000000; font-size: medium;\">By the time the worst of the gunfire was taking place Bobby was lying down sleeping.<\/span><span style=\"color: #000000; font-size: medium;\">\u00a0 <\/span><span style=\"color: #000000; font-size: medium;\">The noise awoke him and he walked to the top of the street to see what was going on.<\/span><span style=\"color: #000000; font-size: medium;\">\u00a0 <\/span><span style=\"color: #000000; font-size: medium;\">Moments later Bobby was shot\u2014a single round through the back\u2014fired, it later transpired from the Chapel grounds\u2014a gaping hole in his front.<\/span><span style=\"color: #000000; font-size: medium;\">\u00a0 <\/span><\/span><span style=\"font-family: Calibri;\"><span style=\"color: #000000; font-size: medium;\">He died shortly afterwards on admittance to Dundonald Hospital.<br \/>\n<\/span><span style=\"color: #000000; font-size: medium;\"> That night, the Belfast IRA achieved what they set out and carefully planned to do.<\/span><span style=\"color: #000000; font-size: medium;\">\u00a0 <\/span><span style=\"color: #000000; font-size: medium;\">They had gained their \u201cspectacular\u201d and set about weaving a web of deceit and lies that would bolster their claims over the next forty years that these were the actions of a community under siege.<\/span><span style=\"color: #000000; font-size: medium;\">\u00a0 <\/span><span style=\"color: #000000; font-size: medium;\">Succinctly\u2014they invented the battle of St. Matthews.<\/span><span style=\"color: #000000; font-size: medium;\">\u00a0 <\/span><span style=\"color: #000000; font-size: medium;\">There was no battle.<\/span><span style=\"color: #000000; font-size: medium;\">\u00a0 <\/span><span style=\"color: #000000; font-size: medium;\">What there was-was a wanton and premeditated attack on a community whose crime that day was to be Protestants celebrating their culture\u2014just as they always had in the preceding years.<\/span><span style=\"color: #000000; font-size: medium;\">\u00a0 <\/span><span style=\"color: #000000; font-size: medium;\">To keep this myth alive they even invented stories around the fatality that occurred within the \u201chaven\u201d of St. Matthews that fateful night.<\/span><span style=\"font-size: medium;\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\">\u00a0 <strong>Henry McIlhone<\/strong><\/span><\/span><span style=\"color: #000000; font-size: medium;\"> was shot dead\u2014of that there is no doubt.<\/span><span style=\"color: #000000; font-size: medium;\">\u00a0\u00a0 <\/span><span style=\"color: #000000; font-size: medium;\">He can hardly be described as an innocent victim as he was reputed to be the gunman who came out of Seaforde Street earlier to fire the first shots and was part of the squad who attacked Protestants from the Church Grounds.<\/span><span style=\"color: #000000; font-size: medium;\">\u00a0 <\/span><span style=\"color: #000000; font-size: medium;\">First stories indicated that he was killed by Loyalist Marauders\u2014His name was bestowed upon a plaque of IRA men in a roll of remembrance.<\/span><span style=\"color: #000000; font-size: medium;\">\u00a0 <\/span><span style=\"color: #000000; font-size: medium;\">It was subsequently removed at the behest of the dead man\u2019s family who claimed he had no affiliation with the IRA.<\/span><span style=\"color: #000000; font-size: medium;\">\u00a0 <\/span><span style=\"color: #000000; font-size: medium;\">In more recent times evidence has emerged that suggests he was indeed shot dead accidentally during the offensive by a cohort within the Chapel grounds\u2014his assailant may well have been <\/span><strong><span style=\"color: #000000; font-size: medium;\">Dennis Donaldson<\/span><\/strong><\/span><span style=\"font-family: Calibri;\"><span style=\"color: #000000; font-size: medium;\">\u2014who went on to have a long and \u201cdistinguished\u201d IRA career before he was outed as a long time informer and later shot dead at a remote location in Donegal.<br \/>\n<\/span><span style=\"color: #000000; font-size: medium;\"> In the intervening years since those tragic days of June 1970 we have become very used to the re writing of history by the Republican section of the community.<\/span><span style=\"color: #000000; font-size: medium;\">\u00a0 <\/span><span style=\"color: #000000; font-size: medium;\">There are many reasons for this\u2014to keep the notion alive that they were justified in what they were doing\u2014to paint us as the baddies during the conflict.<\/span><span style=\"color: #000000; font-size: medium;\">\u00a0 <\/span><span style=\"color: #000000; font-size: medium;\">This nefarious tactic can only succeed if we as a community buy into it and accept what they say.<\/span><span style=\"color: #000000; font-size: medium;\">\u00a0 <\/span><span style=\"color: #000000; font-size: medium;\">However if we challenge them at every turn and can unmask them as the evil machine they were we will, in turn be writing the truthful versions of events.<\/span><span style=\"color: #000000; font-size: medium;\">\u00a0 <\/span><\/span><span style=\"font-family: Calibri;\"><span style=\"color: #000000; font-size: medium;\">To do otherwise would sully the memories of those innocent men who died that night.<br \/>\n<\/span><span style=\"color: #000000;
