{"id":2847,"date":"2014-11-10T09:53:34","date_gmt":"2014-11-10T09:53:34","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.longkeshinsideout.co.uk\/?p=2847"},"modified":"2014-11-10T09:53:34","modified_gmt":"2014-11-10T09:53:34","slug":"rupert-brooke-the-soldier","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"http:\/\/www.longkeshinsideout.co.uk\/?p=2847","title":{"rendered":"Rupert Brooke: The Soldier"},"content":{"rendered":"<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><strong>Rupert Brooke: The Soldier<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<p>\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 <a href=\"http:\/\/www.longkeshinsideout.co.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/11\/rupert.jpg\"><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"alignleft size-medium wp-image-2848\" title=\"rupert\" src=\"http:\/\/www.longkeshinsideout.co.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/11\/rupert-124x300.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"124\" height=\"300\" srcset=\"http:\/\/www.longkeshinsideout.co.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/11\/rupert-124x300.jpg 124w, http:\/\/www.longkeshinsideout.co.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/11\/rupert.jpg 170w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 124px) 100vw, 124px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Rupert Brooke was born in Rugby, Warwickshire in August 1887.\u00a0 He was schooled at Rugby Independent School before taking up a residency at Kings College Cambridge.\u00a0 Whilst there he was elected president of the Fabian Society.\u00a0 Quite quickly he became an established poet and subsequently became part of both the Bloomsbury set and the Georgian Poets.\u00a0 By1914 he had also become known for his war poetry.\u00a0 In early 1915 he was given a commission as a temporary Sub Lieutenant within the Royal Naval Volunteer Reserve.\u00a0 He sailed to the Mediterranean as part of the British Mediterranean Expedition Force.\u00a0 He was bitten by a mosquito and developed sepsis from which he never recovered.\u00a0 He died on the 23<sup>rd<\/sup> April on board a French Hospital ship whilst on route to Gallipoli.\u00a0 The boat had been moored near the island of Skyros.\u00a0 Because the ship had to sail immediately Brooke was buried in an olive grove on the island.<br \/>\nBrooke\u2019s younger brother William was a Second Lieutenant in the 8<sup>th<\/sup> Battalion of the London Regiment.\u00a0 He had only been with the battalion for 3 weeks when he was killed in action at Le Rutiore farm in Northern France in June 1915-two months after Rupert\u2019s death.<br \/>\nRupert Brooke is remembered as one of the greatest of World War One poets and below is possibly his greatest poem.<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><strong>Rupert Brooke<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><strong>The Soldier<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<p>IF I should die, think only this of me:<br \/>\nThat there&#8217;s some corner of a foreign field<br \/>\nThat is forever England.
