{"id":2186,"date":"2013-07-26T16:47:11","date_gmt":"2013-07-26T15:47:11","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.longkeshinsideout.co.uk\/?p=2186"},"modified":"2013-07-26T16:51:51","modified_gmt":"2013-07-26T15:51:51","slug":"blinky-palermo-and-the-wobbling-brush-billy-joe","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"http:\/\/www.longkeshinsideout.co.uk\/?p=2186","title":{"rendered":"BLINKY PALERMO AND THE WOBBLING BRUSH: Billy Joe"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.longkeshinsideout.co.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/07\/Blinky.png\"><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"alignleft size-full wp-image-2187\" title=\"Blinky\" src=\"http:\/\/www.longkeshinsideout.co.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/07\/Blinky.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"72\" height=\"96\" \/><\/a><strong>In an age were it is common place to call newborn children after the latest pop stars or minor celebrities it makes me wonder will thos kids ever develop a nickname or an alternative moniker.\u00a0 The Wazza&#8217;s and Dazza&#8217;s have all but faded into obscurity to be replaced by Britney&#8217;s and Paris&#8217;s&#8211;the Keanu&#8217;s and the Jay-Ze&#8217;s.\u00a0<\/strong><br \/>\nBut where have all the nicknames gone?\u00a0 In days of old many people were better known by the nickname bestowed upon them than the one given at birth.\u00a0 Where are all the Soup&#8217;s and Spud&#8217;s of yesteryear?\u00a0 Twenty-odd years ago a TV programme and accompanying book was produced relating the many glorious nicknames that were preculiar to Harland and Wolff Shipyard.\u00a0 Steel Chest, Nail in the Boot and The Barking Dog.\u00a0 to say that some of the names were inventive is a gross understatement..they are, in many cases the work of genius.\u00a0 And by far the best &#8211;or most appropriate nickname I ever heard came from The Yard&#8211;Pop-Up.\u00a0 If ever a name described the character this is it!!<br \/>\n<a href=\"http:\/\/www.longkeshinsideout.co.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/07\/wobbler.jpg\"><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"alignleft size-full wp-image-2188\" title=\"wobbler\" src=\"http:\/\/www.longkeshinsideout.co.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/07\/wobbler.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"120\" height=\"120\" \/><\/a>Having sailed through Long Kesh Camp for the better part of both the 70&#8217;s and 80&#8217;s it will suffice to say that I heard quite a few nicknames over the years.\u00a0\u00a0I will reproduce many of them here in the hope that it jogs others memories who can provide the ones that I have either overlooked or forgotten.\u00a0 It will, I&#8217;m sure bring a few smile to a few faces around the province and beyond. \u00a0With each name listed there is of course a story&#8211;but&#8211;as they say&#8211;that&#8217;s for another day.\u00a0 Feel free to comment and add your own favourites.<br \/>\n<a href=\"http:\/\/www.longkeshinsideout.co.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/07\/barney.jpg\"><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"alignleft size-full wp-image-2189\" title=\"barney\" src=\"http:\/\/www.longkeshinsideout.co.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/07\/barney.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"95\" height=\"120\" \/><\/a>The most common nicknames tended to be derived from surnames and over the years I came across a host of Jonesy&#8217;s and Stewarty&#8217;s&#8211;Smudgers and Smickers.\u00a0 There were Blackie&#8217;s, Whitey&#8217;s, Greeners and the odd Red.\u00a0 And then you had Janty&#8217;s, Beller&#8217;s Dinger&#8217;s and Dougie&#8217;s.\u00a0 Quite a few Winky&#8217;s on my travels as well.\u00a0 The list goes on.\u00a0 And it will be obvious with many what the name relates to.\u00a0 Some are too obscure to even hazard a guess. Keyhole Kate&#8211;Barney Rubble&#8211;Dogs Dinner&#8211;The Frog&#8211;Seven Stone&#8211;The Gannet&#8211;The Rooster&#8211;War Dog&#8211;Chinaman&#8211;The Buck&#8211;Humphrey Littleone&#8211;Nipper Lawerence&#8211;Boko&#8211;The Hat&#8211;Bamber, in reference to a sadly departed MLA!!.<br \/>\n<a href=\"http:\/\/www.longkeshinsideout.co.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/07\/bamber.jpg\"><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"alignleft size-medium wp-image-2190\" title=\"bamber\" src=\"http:\/\/www.longkeshinsideout.co.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/07\/bamber-300x231.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"300\" height=\"231\" srcset=\"http:\/\/www.longkeshinsideout.co.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/07\/bamber-300x231.jpg 300w, http:\/\/www.longkeshinsideout.co.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/07\/bamber.jpg 400w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><\/a>Dumpkoff&#8211;Binge&#8211;Verbal Abuse&#8211;Snatters&#8211;Blinky Palermo&#8211;Fat Head&#8211;Skel&#8217;s a Singer&#8211;Big Eyes\/No Thumbs&#8211;Hoker&#8211;The Galloper&#8211;The Wobbling Brush&#8211;Tut-Tut&#8211;The Grout&#8211;Burgermaster&#8211;again very appropriate if you know the person&#8211;Alarm Clock Harry&#8211;The Sherriff of Nottingham&#8211;The Bubble&#8211;Scaramouche&#8211;Hacksaw&#8211;The Muppet&#8211;Henry the Hippo&#8211;Karl Heinz Rummager&#8211;it&#8217;s a long story!!&#8211;Brick&#8211;<a href=\"http:\/\/www.longkeshinsideout.co.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/07\/sheriff.jpg\"><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"alignleft size-full wp-image-2191\" title=\"sheriff\" src=\"http:\/\/www.longkeshinsideout.co.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/07\/sheriff.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"120\" height=\"101\" \/><\/a>The Scout&#8211;A couple of Niggers&#8211;Cleo&#8211;Jazz&#8211;Facecloth Willie&#8211;The Ghost&#8211;Jolly Jack&#8211;Wingnut&#8211;Two by Two&#8211;McSlob.<br \/>\nHopefully this has given a few smiles and jerked a few memories for the auld hands out there to add to.\u00a0 There are many more so get writing!!<\/p>\n<p><strong>Billy Joe<\/strong><\/p>\n<div style=\"padding-bottom:20px;
