Interpretive centre on the Newtownards Road last week.\u00a0 Recently opened by the East Belfast brigade the centre is self funding.\u00a0 David Stitt is one of the volunteer staff&#8211;they hope to eventually procure manistream funding which would allow full or part time staff&#8211;and he gave us a comprehensive presentation whilst showing us round.\u00a0 Although only opened a matter of weeks the centre has the potential to become a great addition to venues displaying aspects of Loyalist culture.\u00a0Already there are many artefacts and mementoes&#8211;old Workers Strike passes&#8211;minutes from old LPA meetings&#8211;jail handicrafts&#8211;obsolete weapons&#8211;but the highlight for me was the collection of old photographs, illustrating all the stages of the most recent conflict.\u00a0 David explained the rationale behind opening\u00a0the centre.\u00a0 They want to engage with individuals and groups to help understand the reasons around the need for the formation of\u00a0a paramilitary force over 40 years ago.\u00a0 They will also show the impact the conflict had on loyalist working class communities&#8211;in particular East\u00a0Belfast&#8211;how it shaped U.D.A. thinking over the years and how it impacted upon them to turn from Dogs of war into men of peace.\u00a0 A booklet provided by the centre\u00a0\u00a0explains all this in full and carries a strap line&#8211;making a positive difference.\u00a0 Lets hope the Andy Tyrie centre does just that.\u00a0 The centre is currently open for visitors and access can be gained by contacting David Stitt on&#8230;<em><strong>07737 483398<\/strong><\/em>.<\/p>\n<div style=\"padding-bottom:20px; padding-top:10px;\" ><!-- Hupso Share Buttons - http:\/\/www.hupso.com\/share\/ --><a class=\"hupso_toolbar\" href=\"http:\/\/www.hupso.com\/share\/\"><img src=\"http:\/\/static.hupso.com\/share\/buttons\/share-medium.png\" border=\"0\" style=\"padding-top:5px; float:left;\" alt=\"Share\"\/><\/a><script type=\"text\/javascript\">var hupso_services_t=new Array(\"Twitter\",\"Facebook\",\"Google Plus\",\"Linkedin\",\"StumbleUpon\",\"Digg\",\"Reddit\",\"Bebo\",\"Delicious\"); var hupso_toolbar_size_t=\"medium\";var hupso_counters_lang=\"en_US\";var hupso_title_t=\"Andy Tyrie Interpretive Centre\";<\/script><script type=\"text\/javascript\" src=\"http:\/\/static.hupso.com\/share\/js\/share_toolbar.js\"><\/script><!-- Hupso Share Buttons --><\/div>","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>I, along with two colleagues&#8211;both ex-combatants&#8211;visited the new U.D.A.
