A Cause That Was Never Their Own.

Here is another worthy contribution from regular Charlie Freel.  It is a fitting piece in the centenary week of the Ulster Covenant.

Sincere Working class Loyalists, will need to be very careful where they place their trust in the next few weeks, as Loyalist Working class area’s prepare to celebrate the centenary of the Ulster Covenant.

We need to be fully aware of the false covenanters from within the ranks of the Grand Old Duke of Yorkers, from within the ranks of the middle class leadership of the Orange Order and from within the ranks of all those who have used the conflict of the last 40 years, as an opportunity to feather their own nests.   Already they are all starting to re-emerge from the woodwork, in their efforts to obtain leadership roles in the Centenary parades and celebrations, all of them no doubt hoping to profit from any unearned reflected glory that can be gained by their insincere covenanting.  These totally unworthy parasites need to be made to realise that, the Ulster Covenant was a sworn Oath by totally sincere Ulstermen, to defy British Rule and defend by use of force if necessary, the democratic right of the Ulster People to choose their own destiny.  This sacred Oath was in many cases signed in blood in 1912 and sealed by that same blood in 1916 on the battle fields of the Somme. The commemoration parade to Stormont to remember the volunteers of 1912, should be of right, organised and led by  the United Ulster Volunteers from all the Loyalist paramilitary organisations who made that same oath in the early seventies, to defy British Rule and defend by use of force, the democratic right of the Ulster People to choose their own destiny.  The spin doctors of the British and Irish Governments, the DUP “never” “never” “never” men, and their blood soaked partners Sinn Fein/Ira, can spin their peace yarns until they are blue in the face, but the simple fact remains that the IRA campaign of indiscriminate slaughter was stopped only because they finally realised, that in a war of attrition with the Loyalist Working Class, Irish Republicans were never going to win.

A CAUSE THAT WAS NEVER THEIR OWN

It’s so long ago 1913, or so, that I gave up my youth for a cause.

In our countryside sweet, in Belfast’s dark streets, we marched and we trained just like soldiers.

We all rushed to sign, on the blue dotted line, when Lord Carson stood tall, when he gave us the call,

He said Ulster would fight, Ulster would be right, so we marched and we trained, just like soldiers.

Crawford brought us in guns, guns he got from the hun’s, sailed them into Larne on Clyde valley.

We swore we would fight, to defend Ulster’s right, to remain as a part of the Union.

We swore we would fight, to defend Ulster’s right, AGAINST EVEN THE ENGLISH, with all of their might.

For with God on our side, why would we hide? From those who would make us a republic.

But in 1914,a World war it came, the English cried out for our Army,

To fight over in France, they said this is your chance, to prove for all time, that you’re British.

We all rushed to sign, on the blue dotted line, when Lord Carson stood tall, when he gave us the call,

He said Ulster would fight, Ulster would be right, so we all sailed away to be slaughtered.

It’s so long ago 1916, I know, that we fought at a place called the Somme.

In our countryside sweet, in Belfast’s dark streets, no more would we train just like soldiers.

We all rushed to sign, on the blue dotted line, when Lord Carson stood tall, when he gave us the call,

He said Ulster would fight, Ulster would be right, so we fought and we died, we were soldiers.

Those who came home, would never more be the same, not the same, young men who first sailed away.

In that far distant land, they saw at first hand, the madness of man and his war.

They saw their friends die, they heard their friends cry, as they choked on their blood, blown to bits on the wire.

They all wondered why? Why so many had to die, for a cause that was never their own.

YES THEY ALL WONDERED WHY? WHY SO MANY HAD TO DIE, FOR A CAUSE THAT WAS NEVER THEIR OWN.
